    Happy birthday Andrew! What a star you are spending your birthday doing the car project! Oliver is a lucky lad to have the time to spend with such a great engineer and offshore that he appreciates you. Don't feel guilty about your early years with working while the children grow up, you were only doing what all other good fathers do, providing them with all you could and probably going without yourself, I think we can all see what a great Dad, Father and Mentor you are to young Oliver, keep up the good work! P.S. I have a cheap pillar drill (yours looks a bit of a better quality than mine!) but if you put an end mill in the chuck and bring the quill down to take say a 1 or 2 mm cut, then tighten (lock) the quill in that position (mine has a spotted screw and locking nut) that takes all the slack out of the X, Y and Z axis to allow you to move the part in the X and Y axis. Now all you need is a X,Y axis drill press vice new or 2nd hand. Voilla! you have limited milling capability.

    Hi Andrew, As a retired engineer myself (F.E. College) I really enjoyed watching you teach your son an enormous amount of "old school' techniques which nowadays are lost from mainstream engineering schools (unless they're lucky enough to have there own 'Andrew'!) Seeing you file the flat on the tough piece of material, I thought, you haven't a mill to do it, but you do have a lathe! If you put a fly cutting tool in the lathe chuck and the shaft in the tool post you can feed the steel bar toward the fly cutter and then lock the carriage and use the cross feed to take a cut along the the surface of the bar, then repeat till you have the depth and length of cut required. Hope this helps you for the future, Denis cheers, Denis

    Wesley Kagen just dropped his fist video in a long time, and I couldn't help but wish as he was assembling his beautifully engineered and manufactured pedal box that we got at least half as much "how it was made" content as you and your dad give us. Fantastic work, as always Oliver. Watching people create is always fascinating, which is probably why we all tire of the automotive shows that just throw part catalogs at a project. Unfortunately not everyone can take the time to also run a camera every minute they're creating. So thank you for keeping the cameras rolling.

    I've seen a few milled pedals where they essentially used the end of an angled end mill (i was taught how to machine but not "properly" so idk a lot of terminology) and ran grooves in the pedal on a grid to create a kinda trapezoidal profile, square top pads (not a super tight grid usually like 3 or 4 rows/columns depending on pedal size) then drill out the intersections of the lines for lightness. I had to make a foot pedal for this gnarly old school ironworker we have and i wanted it to look fancy so i did the grid and even with oil and coolant all over your shoe sole you dont slide off. Hope this makes even a slight bit of sense

    16:00 it's so strange seeing it done that way i would of just welded it, basically warp only happens IF you don't jig it correctly & clamp it down enough to counteract the warp. to give you a rough idea how to i'll explain a scenario: you have two aluminium plates ones clamped firmly to a flat surface the other is tacked to the clamped plate in the middle of each side of the plate if you were to run a bead across the top the only way the free plate can warp is up & down because of the tacks act as a pivot point, it can't warp down because the clamping surface is in the way to the only way the free plate can warp is up so the best way to counteract said warp is to clamp it to the flat clamping surface to stop the upwards warp. so in short how accurate a welded part is is dependent on the skill of the welder to minimise distortion i should know this since for a couple years i welded 1,5mm aluminium window cills for a living & that material used to warp if you looked at it funny :p

    • @OliverPickard

  • @steveschriefer2733
    @steveschriefer2733 2 дня назад

    Great work as always. I think a cool look would be for you to create a jig to hold brake and clutch pedals at their correct orientation when mounted and then have your dad use the lathe to create concentric circles for the grip surfaces. You could then do the same to the accelerator pedal by just using its current center point. I'd finish it off with countersunk holes to further reduce the weight. Whatever you do, you'll make it look great, but you can really have some fun coming up with a finished pedal grip pattern and finish.

    I wish I had your knowledge of car design and skills a few years , ok two decades ago ! I was lent a copy of David Vizard's book ca;;ed 'how to modify A series engines ' , or similar . This book goes into every conceivable mod under the bonnet and it inspired me to build a Mini street race engine . When I settled down a bit from dreams of 120 hp , I realised I would need a car body and even then decent Mini chassis cost more than I had . Even if I bought a second hand shell Minis were known for needing a bit of welding for mot tests etc ; welding was a skill I had no time to learn really . Long story shortened ... I bought a brand new GTM Rossa Mk2 ! Guess what it never was completed . Some excuses could include a divorce , blah blah . So here I am watching you building a car from a glass kit car , a Cox GTM no less , and you are building metal into it . The opposite to what I had planned ! Most interesting and enjoyable . Thank you for showing us your ideas and skills , we must never stop learning !

      @@OliverPickard The prices of mini A series parts has made rebuilding them a less popular engine . So unless , like yourselves , you can install another engine competently , a pre K series engined GTM is not so attractive . AC Dod , who has a youtube channel and a mini expert , was saying a second hand second gear was 250 quid on a recent video . I must admit that I did think of using a bike engine in my Rossa and I am most surprised you have managed to squeeze a Honda R type motor into your car ! Fair play . Your attention to detail and explaining stuff will keep me watching . All the best ,

    Presume you played about with the spacing for heeling and toeing. How did you work that out before the (beautiful) parts existed?

    I think you're doing a fantastic Father and son project with that car The nice thing about it is that with the engine and transmission and other parts on the off chance that something breaks down the road it's not going to break the bank to be able to fix it.

    What do I think? Bloody brilliant is what I think! I’ve watched all the vids and really appreciate your reasoning in doing every step of the build in your own way and communicating the methods clearly. Cheers H.
